Windows 10 Windows 8.1 compatibility for the surface pro 4

Hello! I was trying to install windows 8.1 on my surface pro 4, everything was going well, until it restarted and booted to a black screen with white text on it, I'm wondering what's wrong and is it possible to downgrade on my surface pro 4?
